LaMancha goat
The LaMancha is the dairy goat that looks as if it has no ears. The ear flaps are tiny, 1 in or less on bucks and up to 2 in on does, and the goat hears perfectly well. It was developed in the United States, is a little smaller than the Alpine and Saanen, and is known for a calm nature. Recorded does averaged 2,430 lb of milk a lactation in 2025, at 3.7 to 3.9% butterfat.

Is the LaMancha right for you?
Good fit if
- You want a calm dairy goat. The association and Purdue both single the breed out for its calm nature
- You want good milk without the size of an Alpine or Saanen. Recorded does averaged 2,430 lb a lactation in 2025
- You want a sturdy goat. Oklahoma State says it can withstand a great deal of hardship and still produce
Poor fit if
- You want the most milk per doe. Alpines and Saanens average about 3,000 lb a lactation
- You want the richest milk. Butterfat is 3.7 to 3.9%, against 4.9% for the Nubian in Penn State's table
- You want a small goat. Does stand at least 28 in and weigh 130 lb or more
Appearance and varieties
The ears are the mark of the breed. There are two types. The gopher ear is about 1 in at most, preferably non-existent, with very little or no cartilage. The elf ear is up to about 2 in, and cartilage shaping the small ear is allowed. On both, the end of the ear must turn up or down.
Only gopher-eared bucks can be registered. In does neither ear type has an advantage. Cornell points out that the goat hears just as well as other breeds.
The face is straight, the hair is short, fine and glossy, and any colour is accepted. The association's minimums are 28 in and 130 lb for does and 30 in and 160 lb for bucks, a little under those for the Alpine, Saanen and Nubian.915
Temperament and handling
The association says the LaMancha is known for its calm nature. Purdue describes LaManchas as usually calmer and more docile than other breeds, and Oklahoma State credits the breed with an excellent dairy temperament.
Purdue notes that the LaMancha's voice is typical of other goats.169

Housing, feed and health
Housing
For dairy goats Purdue recommends 20 to 25 sq ft of enclosed housing a goat, plus 50 sq ft of exercise yard, behind a woven-wire or electric fence at least 4 ft high. Cornell's minimum is 12 to 15 sq ft of shed floor per doe when she also has a yard.
A three-sided shed open to the south is enough in many places. What matters is that it is dry, well ventilated and free of drafts.
Purdue puts the comfort zone for dairy goats at 55 to 70 °F and says milk yield and feed intake fall off above 80 °F, so the aim is to keep them cool in summer; it recommends open windows for ventilation and air movement.810
Feed
Penn State's advice for dairy goats is that hay, pasture and browse should make up most of the diet. Does in milk need grain as well; for high producers it suggests 1 lb of grain for every 2.5 to 3 lb of milk. Too much grain with too little fibre upsets the rumen and lowers the fat in the milk.
Forage rarely has enough minerals, so offer a goat mineral mix. Most products made for sheep do not contain enough copper for goats. Clean water must always be within reach; Penn State calls it essential for milk production and herd health.4
Health
We found no health problems that the sources tie to this breed in particular. Penn State names parasites as the biggest health concern for any goat, and mastitis, an udder infection, as a major one for dairy goats. Clean, dry bedding, good ventilation and clean milking habits are its first defences.
It also advises asking a vet about screening tests before you buy, because caseous lymphadenitis, CAE and Johne's disease spread by contact or through milk.
This is a starting point, not veterinary advice. Work with a vet who treats goats, or ask your county extension office.4

History
The LaMancha is an American breed. Oklahoma State says it originated in Oregon with Mrs Eula Frey, from short-eared goats of a type found not only in La Mancha but throughout Spain. Purdue says those short-eared goats were crossed with Nubians.
Official milk testing established the breed as a producer with high butterfat. It is now one of the eight major dairy goat breeds in the United States.964
Common questions
Why do LaMancha goats have no ears?
They do have ears, just very short ones. It is the breed's defining trait: gopher ears are 1 in or less with little or no cartilage, and elf ears are up to 2 in. The goats hear as well as any other breed.95
How big do LaMancha goats get?
The American Dairy Goat Association gives minimums, not a range: does at least 28 in tall and 130 lb, bucks at least 30 in and 160 lb.1
How much milk does a LaMancha goat give?
The association's 2025 breed average was 2,430 lb a lactation, with recorded does ranging from 1,200 to 5,570 lb. That is more than a Nubian's 1,860 lb and less than an Alpine's 3,037 lb.3
What is the butterfat in LaMancha milk?
Between 3.7 and 3.9% in the three tables we checked, with protein at 3.1 to 3.2%.456
Are LaMancha goats friendly?
They have a reputation for it. The association says the breed is known for its calm nature, and Purdue says LaManchas are usually calmer and more docile than other breeds.16
What colours do LaMancha goats come in?
Any colour or combination of colours is acceptable, with no preferences.1
Where do LaMancha goats come from?
The United States. Oklahoma State says the breed originated in Oregon with Mrs Eula Frey, from short-eared goats of a Spanish type.9
