Pygmy goat

The Pygmy is a small, stocky, good-natured goat kept as a pet, a show animal and a first 4-H or FFA project. Adults stand 16–23⅝ in at the withers. It is a herd animal, so plan on at least two, and it needs fencing at least 4 ft high.

Is the Pygmy right for you?

Good fit if

  • You want a small, friendly goat as a pet or a child's first 4-H project
  • You have room for a small shed and a fenced outdoor pen: the association says an 8 × 10 ft shed holds four adults
  • You want to show: the association sanctions shows with classes for does, bucks and wethers

Poor fit if

  • You want only one goat. They are herd animals and need a companion
  • You want a milk goat. The association says the Nigerian Dwarf, not the Pygmy, was selected for dairy characteristics and milk production
  • You can't put up fencing at least 4 ft high

Appearance and varieties

The breed standard's words are small, cobby and compact. The head and legs are short for the length of the body, and the barrel is so wide and deep that the standard says it gives an impression of perpetual pregnancy. The body is rounder for its height than a dairy goat's.

Adult does stand 16 to 22⅜ in at the withers and adult bucks 16 to 23⅝ in. The standard sets no weight. A University of Florida fact sheet puts the breed at 53 to 86 lb.

The coat is straight and medium-long, and thicker or thinner with the season and climate. Bucks should have a full, long beard and a mane that drapes like a cape over the shoulders. Does may have a sparse beard or none.

Ears are medium-sized and upright, the profile is slightly dished, and the eyes are brown. Every colour except solid black must have the muzzle, crown, eyes and ears accented in white.43

VarietyNotes
Caramel with black markingsTop coat anywhere from white to dark tan. Face, dorsal stripe and the sides and rear of the socks are accented in black, with a vertical stripe the colour of the top coat down the front of each sock.411
Caramel with brown markingsThe same pattern with the socks, dorsal stripe and martingale accented in brown.411
Grey agoutiBlack and white hairs mixed, from light silver to dark salt-and-pepper, with solid black stockings.11
Brown agoutiBrown and white hairs mixed, with solid brown stockings darker than the body.411
Black agoutiMainly black with only occasional white hairs mixed in.11
BlackBlack with the muzzle, crown, eyes and ears accented in white. The tail may be too.411
Solid blackAll black with no lighter accents. The only solid colour accepted.411

Temperament and handling

The standard describes the Pygmy as hardy, agile, alert and animated, good-natured and gregarious. The association adds that it is a docile, responsive pet.

They are sociable and do better in a herd or with at least one other goat. One of the breeders we checked will not sell a single kid to a home with no other goats.428

Animals vary within a breed. Treat this as what to expect, not a promise, and meet the animal before you buy if you can.

Housing, feed and health

Housing

The association says a draft-free 8 × 10 ft shed with raised places to sleep and eat will hold four adults. A separate association article suggests about 15 to 20 sq ft a goat. Pygmies like a shelf to jump up on and sleep; the author of that article builds them about 2 ft off the floor.

Attach an outdoor pen with fencing at least 4 ft high. Shelter has to keep out wind, rain and snow but still let air through: warm, damp air in a closed barn causes breathing problems.

Purdue's general guidance for goats is that cold is the lesser problem if bedding is dry and there are no drafts, and that feed intake falls above 80 °F, so summer shade and air movement matter more than winter warmth.2126

Feed

The association describes the basic diet as roughage: legume and grass hay, bark, brush and dry leaves, with supplements as needed. Penn State's advice for goats in general is the same: hay, pasture and browse should make up most of the diet, and grain should be limited because too much with too little fibre upsets the rumen.

Forage rarely has enough minerals, so offer a goat mineral mix. Penn State notes that most products made for sheep do not contain enough copper for goats. Keep clean water available at all times.21312

Health

Penn State calls goats a hardy species and names internal and external parasites as the biggest health concern for any goat. Its basics are clean feeders and waterers, no overcrowding, rotated pasture, and keeping new animals apart for 30 days before they join the herd.

When you buy, the association suggests asking whether the herd is tested each year for CAE, caseous lymphadenitis and Johne's disease. Hooves need trimming about every 8 weeks.

This is a starting point, not veterinary advice. Find a vet who treats goats before you need one, or ask your county extension office.137

History

The Pygmy was first called the Cameroon Dwarf goat, after the part of West Africa it came from. Goats from there were sent to zoos in Sweden and Germany as exotic animals, and from those zoos to England, Canada and the United States.

Oklahoma State University gives 1959 as the year of the first documented shipments from Sweden, to the Rhue family in California and the Catskill Game Farm in New York. Their offspring went to zoos, medical research and private owners.

The Pygmy and the Nigerian Dwarf both come from West African dwarf goats. American breeders selected Pygmies for a small, stocky body and Nigerian Dwarfs for dairy character and milk. The National Pygmy Goat Association was founded in 1976 and keeps the registry and the breed standard.101

Common questions

How big do Pygmy goats get?

Adult does stand 16 to 22⅜ in at the withers and adult bucks 16 to 23⅝ in. The breed standard sets no weight; a University of Florida fact sheet gives 53 to 86 lb.43

Are Pygmy goats good pets?

Yes, if you can keep two. The association describes them as good-natured, docile and responsive, and as an ideal first livestock animal for a young 4-H member. They are herd animals and need another goat for company.12

How much does a Pygmy goat cost?

On the two breeder pages we checked, wether kids were $200–350, doe kids $250–600 and buck kids $300–600.89

What colours do Pygmy goats come in?

The association registers seven: caramel with black markings, caramel with brown markings, grey agouti, brown agouti, black agouti, black and solid black.11

How much space do Pygmy goats need?

The association says an 8 × 10 ft draft-free shed holds four adults, or about 15 to 20 sq ft each, plus an outdoor pen with fencing at least 4 ft high.212

What is the difference between a Pygmy and a Nigerian Dwarf goat?

Both come from West African dwarf goats. Pygmies were bred for small, stocky bodies; Nigerian Dwarfs were selected for dairy character and milk production.1

Do Pygmy goats have horns?

Yes. The breed is genetically horned, and genetic hornlessness is a disqualifying fault. Disbudding and dehorning are allowed.41

How long do Pygmy goats live?

For goats in general, the University of Florida says 12 to 14 years, and sometimes far longer. The association says Pygmies can live well into their teens.37
